Review of "Ravnens Saga" by Svartsot
Not original, but quite fun.

in the happier of ranges. Very often a merry melody is played on the flute as a main theme, while the guttural screams and remaining instruments back it up and underline it.
Their lyrics are obviously inspired by the darker of Nordic folk tales, finishing the circle of the band's image.
It must be said that we're dealing with a relatively new and fresh band here, and their time in the business is so far limited. Therefore I (almost) forgive them their rather obvious lack of identity, 'cause this certainly isn't something we haven't heard before. Otyg, Vintersorg, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Mithotyn, Einherjer (just a hint) and many others are inspirations that ooze out through my speakers the total of 47 minutes.
Though, what Svartsot do bring to the genre, is the mix between the deep growl and the higher scream, a combination that works out very well to create some diversity. Combine that with very decent song writing, a superb production (as always from Napalm based bands) and fine musicianship, and you've got something close to a winner.
What's still missing here is a distinct lack of uniqueness, a trait that's getting harder and harder to find in the world of folk metal. What Svartsot first of all need to do is to find a way to come up with even more memorable melodies, and perhaps vary their tempo a bit, to keep my interest maintained all the way through.
If they can do that, I think they may be on to something.
